HICKORY, N.C. – MassMutual Carolinas, a general agency of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual), has presented Michael R. Watson – a financial advisor in the firm’s Hickory office – with its inaugural “MassMutual Carolinas Live Mutual” Award.
Watson is the second recipient of this award, which recognizes an advisor who is a brand ambassador for MassMutual Carolinas and lives out the firm’s core values – growth, balance, authenticity, conviction and stewardship.

With MassMutual Carolinas since July, 2016, Watson earned his Master of Church Music in Oboe Performance from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Louisville, KY) and his Bachelor of Music in Music Theory from Furman University (Greenville, SC).
Watson locally serves as Director of Hickory Rings!, a community Handbell Ensemble, as a Board Member of the United Arts Council of Catawba County, as President of the Hickory Music Club, and as President of the Sanctuary Choir of First Baptist Church.
“Mike organizes a weekly group that goes to local nursing homes where he and his group sing hymns to the shut-ins. Most of the shut-ins are elderly women that receive no visitors, or only an occasional relative from out of town. When the singing starts, they sing along as best they can, remembering the hymns and songs of their youth. Many are in tears. It is an incredible experience, and Mike leads that charge every week.” said David Wachter, Managing Director of MassMutual Carolinas.
